Amatitlán Railway

Among the beautiful places to visit near Guatemala City, Lake Amatitlán is the biggest lake.
It was a few years ago almost the identical brother of Lake Atitlán.
So far, the pollution and industrial waste coming from the -modern growing city- show the impact on its waters.
Still, Lake Amatitlán is beautiful!
I was doubtful as to believe the recovery of the lake.
My earliest memories tell me about a magical place full of people relaxing and enjoying the landscape. Mmmm yes, now that I compare it, things haven't changed at all: the lake has the same beauty and best of all, the railway is working again.
The railway at Lake Amatitlán was and still is the main attraction combined with the chance of looking at the lake from above, also, reaching the Park at the summit of the cliff.
By 1998 it was closed to the public for safety reasons as the operators failed to perform the required maintenance for whatever reasons... So far, it had 20 years working without maintenance! but fear not!, it was restored and properly fixed so you and I can enjoy it.
Now, the railway is working at full capacity with all the safety you can ask for. The ride is worth spending the whole day around. The price changes as time goes by, but at present time the price was Q20.
Yes, the Lake is still struggling with the pollution but trust me, it is a beautiful place, clean air, natural environment, local food, music, fresh and healthy fish (Mojarras) and more. Come and see for yourself.
