Lake Amatitlan
Lake Amatitlan is the closest lake to Guatemala City. It was a well visited touristic place (and still is).
The lake is recovering from the side effects of the surrounding and growing cities. A lot of progress has been made purifying its waters.
Today, Amatitlan is still a touristic destination with a lot to see. Have lunch at any of the local restaurants near the shore.
The tasty "mojarra" (a delicious local fish) is back, not from the lake but now from growing farms nearby. Enjoy the colorful sweet candies and the cable railway.
This touristic attraction takes you up to the lookout where the view is amazing and the weather simply fresh.
What can you expect at Lake Amatitlan?
- Beautiful view and different restaurants with local (and cheap) meals.
- One side of the lake has become a park where you can spend the whole day watching the landscape, chatting or reading, whatever you like.
- An amazing ride to the lookout via cable railway.
- A peaceful park at the lookout with its own restaurant.
- You can also take a horse ride both at the lookout or at the fields near the lake.
- Yes, sweet candies and other sweet food.
- For the adventurous: near the lake is the Filon de Amatitlan, a cliff with clean and tall rock walls for rock climbers.
How to get to Lake Amatitlan
Drive via the CA9 to the south of Guatemala. The signs are pretty obvious, follow the directions to the lake. Its about a 40 minutes drive from Guatemala City. If you see a restaurant on your left named "Siloe" you went to far, but fear not, ahead you can turn back near a gas station.
From south, Siloe restaurant is right at the entrance. Siloe is a well known restaurant that has been serving delicious food since more years than we can all remember.
Siloe is "Eloisa" name backwards (the owner).
