Santa Cruz del Quiche

At only minutes from Chichicastenango, Santa Cruz del Quiche is the center of the department of Quiche and with attractions on its own.

It has everything you might need, is a modern city with all the accommodations you can think of, from hotels, restaurants, stores of any kind, banks, ATMS, internet cafes, pharmacies, supermarkets and more.

Remember it is a modern city, not a village, so differs very much from what you see at Chichicastenango or Totonicapan.

What to expect at Santa Cruz del Quiche?

  • A peaceful environment. Is a quiet town without the noise and movement of the villages where the market is the main center of attention. It is a refreshing stop on your trip if you come from Chichicastenango and you are heading to Uspantan.
  • A lot of accommodations.
  • Next to the main plaza you'll find the Military Museum or Stone Building. It features the history of the armed conflict, which is a dark part of the history affecting thousands of families who had to leave their home.

And what else can I enjoy here?

From Santa Cruz del Quiche you can return to Guatemala City using another road which goes to Chiche, Pachalum and then Guatemala. This road is long and with little traffic. Let me tell you: the landscape, weather you can see from here are just fantastic. There is no need for a special car as the road is in great conditions, just be patient with some parts usually under manteinance.

How to get to Santa Cruz del Quiche

From Guatemala City travel using the Panamericana CA1. On the -Encuentros- follow the turn to Chichicastenango and from there, under the Arc of Kucumatz, follow the road to Santa Cruz del Quiche passing nearby the Laguna de Lemoa.
