For the year of 1613 began the construction of a convent approved 4 years ago, the Convent of Santa Catalina.

This detention was a convent so the nuns inside avoided all contact with the outside world, including being seen.

Growth soon made his short stay facilities require space to expand so they were given a portion of the block located at the front.

The rise and support given to the religious orders at that time made it relatively easy to solve the problems of growth. But being a convent seclusion, the nuns wanted to avoid at all costs the inconvenience of crossing the street to the public, so in 1693 began the construction of this bridge closed in an arc and inside the nuns moved one side of the convent to another.

Icon and guidance

El Arco de Santa Catalina is located within walking distance of Central Park, in fact visible from the Port of Bakery (opposite the Cathedral and Park). The street known as Calle del Arco "and its distinctive architectural nature and easily has become a reference point for tourists.

Hotel with history

Now the convent was converted into a hotel, the Hotel Convento Santa Catalina Martir.

Remember now the story behind this monument the next time you visit Antigua Guatemala and imagine how in the past as the city expanded, the nuns inadvertently passed from one side to another convent without being seen.

We recommend taking pictures around 10:00 AM with the Agua in the background, or at dusk.
