Salama

It’s the center of Baja Verapaz, at north of Guatemala City.

Both Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz where once in the past the same territory “Verapaz”.

Salama is a peaceful place with fresh weather most of the time. It gets quite warm in summer.

There are just a few hotels at the center and just a few attractions to visit but the journey to the place is worth trying as you can find different and valuable natural destinations as you drive.

Rabinal, Museo del Trapiche are among the most famous destinations, but there are some others usually visited only by adventurous travelers: the waterfalls. As you get close to the entrance to the center of Salama you will find several signs along the way taking you to different Waterfalls, being the most visited: El Salto Chilasco.

The home of the Quetzal

The surroundings of Salama are filled with places where you can actually see the national bird, the Quetzal, a shy and quiet beauty.

Just as you get close to Salama you will find lots of restaurants with exotic food and hotels with guided tours for bird watching.

What to expect at Salama?

How to get to Salama

Follow the road to Atlantico  (Carretera al Atlantico – CA-17) and just before reaching “El Rancho” you will see a turn to “Coban”. Take this turn and stay on the road. It’s about 2 and a half hours driving from Guatemala city.
