The town is located next to the Motagua River. The complete area has several (non public and not so famous) archaeological sites.
The region is one of the main sources of jade, a superficial stone more valuable than gold for the maya culture representing royalty and often related to inmortality.
As the Spanish conquest took place, the locals were expelled to the surroundings when San Cristobal Acasaguastlan was founded.
The name Acasaguastlan is still a matter of discussion as it was difficult to deal with, so the writings of the time mention the place with different variations on the spelling.
