Suchitepequez

Suchitepequez is mostly known and referred to as San Antonio Suchitepequez or San Antonio Suchi, a quiet place with modest accommodations.
The main activity is the agriculture but is also famous for its handicrafts, especially for its fabrics, candles and masks.
Suchitepequez is a nice and peaceful stop when you are going to the main city of the department: Mazatenango.
Mazate, as is often referred to, has lots of commercial activity and some accommodations. Restaurants are more common than hotels as the tourism is still not as strong as in other departments of Guatemala, still you can enjoy a nice stop to recover energies at one of the different places to eat.
What to expect at Suchitepequez and Mazatenango
- Expect modest accommodations and modernity, such as a few hotels, several restaurants, gas stations and stores.
- The weather is often warm.
- Being both places mostly commerce centers, don’t expect a lot when it comes to tourism. Yes, Suchitepequez is a beautiful place worth visiting. Some old places had german occupation so the architecture is very attractive even as old as it is.
How to get to Suchitepequez
From Guatemala City, follow the CA-2, or mostly known as the “road to Retalhuleu”. Very often referred to as the “warm road” to Xela (Quetzaltenango). As you drive from Guatemala City you will reach Escuintla first, then San Antonio Suchitepequez, San Bernardino and finally Mazatenango.
You can follow the same road to reach Retalhuleu and from there get to Quetzaltenango.
